Sincona sale 22, lot 1793

The first specimen was lot 3090 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612 Taler o. J. Gutes sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612), silver thaler without date. good very fine)"

The second specimen was lot 1793 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1587-1612 Taler o. J. Sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587-1612), silver thaler without date. very fine.)"

Davenport lists this undated thaler from the first part of Wolf's reign so we assume it was struck prior to 1593 (the first dated thaler from Salzburg). Later thalers of Salzburg are very common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 28.66 g, the second specimen 28.52 g.
