This specimen was lot 12509 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,116. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 100 Rubles, 1992. PCGS PROOF-69 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Emperor Collection." The Communist regime, in its declining years, issued dozens of commemoratives in various metals as a means of earning foreign exchange. This type honors the province of Yakutia in the far east and the frozen mammoths found there.
