This specimen was lot 72408 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1901-AP. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas II. NGC MS-64. Impressively lust[rous] and providing surfaces with just a mere hint of contact, this Russian beauty is certain to captivate much attention." This type was struck 1897-1911 in sufficient numbers as to be considered a bullion coin. Proofs exist. At the time of issue, 8 French gold francs = 3 Russian gold rubles.

Recorded Mintage: 7,500,000, including assayer ФЗ (FZ).

Specification: 4.30 g, 0.900 fine gold, 18 mm diameter, 0.1244 troy oz AGW.
