Russia 1864-EM 5 kopeks
This specimen was lot 75586 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Kopeks, 1864-EM. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. NGC MS-63 Brown. Though common in circulated grades, the number of surviving 5 Kopeks dramatically thins in Mint State. This RARE Choice example is surpassed by only a single finer coin in the NGC census for the Brown color designation (MS-64 finest). Its lovely, smooth dark chocolate patina is only interrupted by very slight red highlights amongst the devices." This is listed as a common date of a type issued 1858-67. The copper five kopeks was reduced to 16.38 g in 1867 and terminated in 1881.
Recorded mintage: 26,042,000.
Specification: 25.59 g, copper, 36.7 mm diameter.
