Russia 1864-SP AC 5 rubles
The first specimen was lot 31589 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander II gold 5 Roubles 1864 CПБ-AC MS62 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Intricately defined with thick luster in the fields and bold color over both sides that produces wonder eye-appeal." The second specimen was lot 32148 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "Russia: Alexander II gold 5 Roubles 1864 CПБ-AC MS63 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle. Rev. Date and value in circle. The strike is full, and the luster fully brilliant, with only a few tiny marks. A very nice example of the grade." This type is listed for 1859-85 and is fairly common in circulated condition. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz (see KM Y42).
