Russia 1856-SP FB 10 kopeks
The first specimen was lot 72640 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 10 Kopeks, 1856-CNB OB. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Sitting all alone at the top spot in PCGS's census, this shimmering Gem minor offers hues of golden-russet sprinkled throughout." The second specimen was lot 1150 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"RUSSIE, Alexandre II (1855-1881), AR 10 kopecks, 1856Φb. Bitkin 63. Fleur de Coin. (empire of Russia, Alexander II, 1855-81, silver ten kopeks of 1856. Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1832-58 in large numbers and this is a common date. In 1859, the silver was reduced to 0.750 fine and reduced again to 0.500 fine in 1867.
