Sincona sale 78, lot 353

This specimen was lot 353 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Catherine II. 1762-1796, Polushka 1795, Anninskoye Mint. 2.75 roubles according to Petrov. 15 roubles according to Ilyin. Extremely fine. Weakly struck." The polushka was one quarter of a kopek or 1/400 of a ruble. This type was struck throughout the reign of Catherine the Great, who used large mintages of copper to sustain government expenses. This issue seems to lack a mintmark; Ekaterinburg used "EM" and Kolyvan used "KM".

Recorded mintage: 62,000.

Specification: 2.6 g, copper, this specimen 2.84 g.

Catalog reference: KM C55.2, Bitkin 882 (R2).
