Russia 1776-KM 10 kopeks
This specimen was lot 30666 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Siberia. 10 Kopeks, 1776-KM. Suzun Mint. Catherine II (the Great). NGC MS-61 Brown. An ever-popular issue owing to its rather large and impressive size, this Mint State survivor--issued for the vast region known for its desolation and permafrost--offers stunning quality. Deep brown surfaces show an enchanting glossiness with a far superior strike than is generally encountered. From the Sigma Collection." This type was struck 1766-81 for circulation in Siberia. Many survive today but few in choice condition. Two and five kopeks were also issued for Siberia and featured the marten, the pursuit of which was the reason for the conquest of the region.
