This specimen was lot 25338 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carol I Proof Leu 1881-V, Proof 65 NGC, deeply toned with magenta and sea green patina on the reverse. A most appealing example and very rare in Proof." This type is listed for 1881 only. This specimen realized four times the catalog value for a proof.
Recorded mintage: 1,800,000.
