This specimen was lot 971 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 20 Lei, 1883-B. NGC MS-63." This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1883 and 1890, either at Hamburg or Bucharest. The weight and fineness matches that of a French twenty francs d'or. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1906, when the stress of inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the twenty lei resumed in 1930, it was a nickel-brass coin.
