Romania 1890-B 20 lei
This specimen was lot 3216 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$327 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUMÄNIEN. Carol I. 1866-1914 20 Lei 1890. Fast vorzüglich. Kleine Kratzer. (Romania, Carol I, 1866-1914, twenty lei of 1890. About extremely fine, Small scratches.)"
This type was struck for the kingdom of Romania in 1883 and 1890, either at Hamburg or Bucharest. The weight and fineness matches that of a French twenty francs d'or. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1906, when the stress of inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the twenty lei resumed in 1930, it was a nickel-brass coin.
