This specimen was lot 10641 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $518. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 5 Lei, 1881-B. Carol I as King, reeded edge. Toned. NGC AU-58. From the Demarete Collection." After 2.2 million were struck in 1881, Charles's title was changed from "Lord" (see Dav-272) to "King" and then a third type was struck (see Dav-274), with edge lettering instead of reeding.

Recorded mintage: 570,000 from the Brussels mint.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.
