This specimen was lot 10639 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA. 5 Lei, 1880-B. Name near truncation. Dark toned, sharply struck. NGC MS-63. From the Demarete Collection." The SCWC notes two varieties for this date, with the engraver's name near the rim or near the truncation of the bust (shown here). After 2.2 million were struck in 1881, Charles's title was changed from "Lord" to "King" (see Dav-273) and then a third type was struck (see Dav-274), with edge lettering instead of reeding.
Recorded mintage: 1,800,000 from the Brussels mint.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM-12, Dav-272.
