CNG Lissner sale, lot 820

This specimen was lot 820 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $193.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA, Principality. Carol I. As Domnitor, 1866-1881. CU 2 Bani. Bucharest mint; privy mark: grain ear. Dated 1880/79 B. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 RB. Reddish brown patina overall. Only two ever graded, this being the highest. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, July 1979." This type was struck in Bucharest 1879-81 to the standard of a French bronze two centimes. It is common, tho the overdate receives a substantial premium. Prince Carol was promoted to king in 1881.
