Regensburg 1696-MF 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 3166 in Künker sale 405 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DIE REICHSSTADT REGENSBURG. DIE ZEIT DES KAISERS LEOPOLDS I. 1/2 Reichstaler 1696, mit Titel Leopolds I. Münzmeister Michael Federer. Stempelschneider Philipp Heinrich Müller. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (city of Regensburg, half thaler of 1696, struck in the name of Leopold I. Extremely rare, handsome patina, extremelly fine.)"
While the half thalers of the seventeenth century are generally scarce, this issue of 1696 is rare even among them. The next issue of half thalerw would be in 1706 (KM 232).
