Künker sale 264, lot 3635

This specimen was lot 3635 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €3,300 (about US$4,263 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Friedrichs d'or 1840, A. GOLD. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, frederick d'or of 1840, very attractive extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in Berlin 1825-40 and is listed in the SCWC as a "frederick d'or." The last friedrichs d'or was struck in 1855 (KM 469) and was replaced by the gold half krone (KM 493, struck 1861-69), which contained about 70/83 of the gold in the previous denomination. The gold krone was in turn superseded by the gold twenty mark of the German Empire.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
