This specimen was lot 971 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 1,550 euro (about US$2,385 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, PRUSSE, Friedrich Wilhelm III (1797-1840), AV Friedrich d'or (5 Taler), 1836 A, Rare. Superbe. (Germany, Prussia, Frederick William III (1797-1840), gold frederick d'or (5 thalers), 1836A, rare, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Berlin 1825-40 and is listed in the SCWC as a "frederick d'or." The last friedrichs d'or was struck in 1855 (KM 469) and was replaced by the gold half krone (KM 493, struck 1862-69), which contained about 70/83 of the gold in the previous denomination. The gold half krone was in turn superseded by the gold ten mark of the German Empire.
