Künker sale 263, lot 718

This specimen was lot 718 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €22,000 (about US$28,420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1838, A. Probe mit großem Abstand zwischen Kopf und Münzzeichen auf der Vorderseite und kleiner Krone und veränderter Umschrift auf der Rückseite: ZWEI THALER - VII EINE F* M*. Mit Randschrift; Von größter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Erstabschlag, fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, double union thaler of 1838, pattern with large distance between the head and mint mark on the front and small crown and modified inscription on the edge. Lettered edge. Extremely rare, Proof example, choice extremely fine.)"

This pattern varies from the regular issue of 1839-40 by a different edge (the regular edge states "GOTT MIT UNS").

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 37.03 g, 0.900 fine silver, lettered edge; this specimen 37,08 g.
