Künker sale 353, lot 4036

This specimen was lot 4036 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €240 (about US$334 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Ku.-Schilling 1801, A. Prägung der Stadt Danzig. Sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, copper schilling of 1801, struck for the city of Danzig. Very fine.)"

The city of Danzig, long the main port of the kingdom of Poland, was seized by the Prussians in the First Partition (1772) and was ruled by them until after World War One. This coin, struck in Berlin for use there, is listed in the SCWC as a "szelag", but we will use the German name, as that is what is stamped on the coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 1,24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 135 (listed under Danzig), J. 151; Olding 153.
