Künker sale 353, part of lot 3494

This specimen was part of lot 3494 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €900 (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Reichstaler preuß. a) Reichstaler preuß. 1781 B, Breslau. Greisenantlitz. ...2 Stück., Kratzer, vorzüglich und sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, thaler of 1781, Breslau mint, old head. [One of] two pieces, scratches, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at Berlin, Breslau (shown here) and Königsberg 1775-86. These coins saw hard use and are frequently found heavily worn. As they were only 0.750 fine, they were spent and the issues of other principalities hoarded.

Recorded mintage: 187,769.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, .537 troy oz AGW, this specimen is 22,18 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-2590, KM-332.2, Kluge 126.2; Olding 86.
