Künker sale 353, lot 3663

This specimen was lot 3663 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €20 (about US$28 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Groschen 1771, E, Königsberg. Fast sehr schön. Erworben am 1.6.1983 von Udo Gans, Arnsberg. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, groschen of 1771, Königsberg mint, about very fine.)"

This type was struck 1771-72 and 1778-86 and is fairly common. This type was officially struck for Prussia but likely also circulated in Poland. The weak government there could do little to prevent the dumping of debased coin and Prussia, Russia and Austria were quick to take advantage.

Recorded mintage: 1,619,535.

Specification: 0.83 g, silver, 16 mm diameter, this specimen is 0.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM A327.2, Olding 233; Kluge 244.1.
