Prussia 1769-E groschen
This specimen was part of lot 3662 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €45 (about US$63 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Groschen a) Groschen 1769 E, Königsberg. Prägung für die Provinz Preußen. Die Vorderseitenumschrift beginnt oben rechts. Exemplar der Auktion Möller 14, Kassel 1994, Nr. 1312. ...2 Stück., Sehr schön und sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, groschen of 1769, Königsberg mint, struck for the province of Prussia. The obverse legend begins on the right. [One of] two pieces, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1764 and 1769-70 and is fairly common. This type was officially struck for Prussia but likely also circulated in Poland. The weak government there could do little to prevent the dumping of debased coin and Prussia, Russia and Austria were quick to take advantage.
Recorded mintage: 876,008 for 1769-70.
Specification: 0.83 g, silver, 16 mm diameter, this specimen is 0,69 g.
