Künker sale 353, lot 3576

This specimen was lot 3576 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €20 (about US$28 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1 Guter Pfennig 1768, A, Berlin. Prägung für die Mark Brandenburg. Mit der Jahreszahl auf der Vorderseite und dem Münzstättenzeichen auf der Rückseite. Leicht korrodiert, Schrötlingsfehler, fast sehr schön. Erworben am 30.3.2002. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, good pfennig of 1768, Berlin mint, struck for the mark of Brandenburg, with the date on the obverse and the mintmark on the reverse. Light corrosion, planchet flaws, about very fine.)"

Altho it seems normal to us that low value coins be struck from base metal, in the eighteenth century the Prussian government attempted to put silver in every coin, even if it was only a trace, as here. Copper pfennig were struck 1751-55 but the regime went back to billon for this issue of 1768-70. It is common.

Recorded mintage: 1,219,962.

Specification: 0.65 g, 0.069 fine silver, this specimen is 0,36 g.

Catalog reference: KM 319, Olding 153; Kluge 205.1.
