Sincona sale 51, lot 3166

This specimen was lot 3166 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,206 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Friedrich II. 1740-1786. Taler 1768 A, Berlin. . Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. Leicht justiert. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II, 1740-86, thaler of 1768, Berlin mint. Rare in this condition, Uncirculated, Minor adjustment marks.)"

Despite Frederick the Great's strenuous efforts to build up the local economy, Prussia remained a poor and backward country. This type was struck 1764-75 at Berlin (mintmark "A"), Konigsburg (mintmark "E"), Magdeburg (mintmark "F") and Cleve (mintmark "C"). While many individual dates are rare, the type is common in circulated condition.
