Portugal 1940 10 escudos rev 600.jpg

The specimen shown is from a type struck for Portugal 1932-48. Despite the seven years of issue in fairly substantial numbers, the coin is not common and can be pricey in nice condition. This date and the 1932 are the most available in high grade. The handsome caravel obverse design was carried forward to the issue of 1954-55 (KM 586), which is much more affordable. The caravel also sailed on Portuguese two-and-a-half and five escudos of the same period.

Recorded mintage: 1,199,529.

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .335 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 582, Gomes-43.05.
