Portugal 1940 escudo rev DSLR.jpg

In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a rare date of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded a silver type struck 1915-16 (KM 564) and in turn was replaced by a smaller bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro. This date is the first somewhat available date after a run of rare dates 1930-39 tho it is still expensive in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: 1,259,359.

Specification: 7.5 g, copper nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-578, Gomes-25.08.
