Portugal 1939 escudo
This specimen was lot 10629 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1939. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder." In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a rare date of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded a silver type struck 1915-16 (KM 564) and in turn was replaced by a smaller bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro. This date is from a run of rare dates 1930-39; prior and subsequent dates are much more available.
Recorded mintage: 304,300.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-578; Gomes-25.07.
