In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is a from a type struck 1924-26, 1930, 1938, 1940. The bronze type which superseded it (KM 583) was issued 1942-69.

Recorded mintage: 3,384,000, a common date.
