Shown is a silver 500 réis of 1855. It was struck 1855-56 only and superseded a type struck 1854 featuring a younger bust of the king, Pedro V, who died in 1861. A later type exists for Pedro V showing a more mature bust (KM 498). The type is not expensive but seldom seen.
Recorded mintage: 1,477,770.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.917 fine silver, .368 troy oz ASW.
