Shown is a silver 500 réis of 1854. It was struck the one year only and superseded a type struck 1837-53 for Maria II that weighed 14.8 grams. Later types exist for Pedro V showing more mature busts (KM 494 and KM 498). The type is not expensive but seldom seen.
Recorded mintage: 592,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.917 fine silver, .368 troy oz ASW.
