Shown is a gold 1000 réis of 1855. The first specimen was lot 1610 in Jean Elsen sale 85 (Brussels, September 2005), where it sold for 130 euro. It was struck the one year only and along with an issue of Maria II dated 1851, the only issues of this denomination in gold. Gold 2000, 5000 and 10000 réis saw much more extensive issues. The second specimen was lot 2422 in Goldberg sale 34 (Beverly Hills, February 2006), where it sold for $172.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal. 1000 Reis, 1855. Pedro V. Head. Reverse: Arms. One year type. Extremely Fine."
