Portugal 1822 40 reis
The first specimen was lot 32116 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal. João VI 40 Reis (Pataco) 1822 MS66 Brown NGC, Lisbon mint. An outstanding piece with virtually pristine surfaces, needle-sharp strike, and exhibiting a lovely brown patina with mint red along the peripheries. A survey of the NGC Census reveals that this coin is not only the finest of its type (KM370) when compared to stated numbers, but ties for the finest across every type in its denomination, a true testament to its conditional rarity!" The second specimen was lot 23504 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[2] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis, 1822. Lisbon Mint. Joao VI. NGC MS-61 Brown. An immensely attractive specimen, this Mint State piece features deep brown surfaces with a light glossy nature and underlying brilliance. While the strike is solid, this example would appear to be a bit conservatively graded in the opinion of this cataloger. As is, tied with just one other as the finest seen by NGC." This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1820-25 and is scarce in nice condition. These heavy bronze coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. The last pataco was struck in 1847. King João VI was regent for his mother starting in 1799 and became king on his mother's death in 1816.
