Portugal 1823 40 reis KM-370
This specimen was lot 22893 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $105.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis (Pataco), 1823. NGC EF-45 BN. Separated inscription above bust. Pleasing cocoa brown surfaces." The cataloguers miscatalogued this as KM-371, with a different reverse; this specimen appears to be the usual KM-370, with the shield over the crowned globe. This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1820-25 and is scarce in nice condition. These heavy bronze coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. The last pataco was struck in 1847. King João VI was regent for his mother starting in 1799 and became king on his mother's death in 1816.
