This specimen was lot 25317 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "João VI gold Peca (6400 Reis) 1823, MS62 NGC, appealing old-time patina with lustrous surfaces." This type was struck 1818-24 but only the last three dates are at all available to collectors. Many varieties exist in the wreath on the reverse. The king returned to Portugal from Brazil in 1818 and in 1822 Brazil declared independence with his son Pedro as emperor.

Recorded mintage: 27,000.
