This specimen was lot 672 in the Eliasberg sale (New York, April 2005), where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "1822 2 escudos. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with golden brown overtones. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was issued in small numbers 1818-23; the 1822 is the most common date. The last peça was struck in 1835 during the reign of Maria II; decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.
Recorded mintage: 14,000.
Specification: 7.15 g, .917 gold, .210 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 7.13 grams, 25.70 mm diameter.
