Portugal 1809 6400 reis
This specimen was lot 75533 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Peca (6400 Reis), 1809. Lisbon Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC MS-61. Quite glistening and radiant, this examples offers a bold to sharp strike that reveals ample detail. A light rose gold sheen has developed in the fields while underlying golden-yellow luster blazes throughout. From the third most challenging date in the series based off mintage figures provided by Krause, such a well preserved example is sure to excite series experts." This type was struck 1804-16 but is seldom seen compared to similar coins that were struck in Brazil. João was in 1809 still Prince Regent for his mother, queen Maria I, not mounting the throne until her death in 1816. In 1809, he was still enjoying the tropical delights of Rio de Janiero and resisting the cortés' demand that he return.
Recorded mintage: 12,957.
