Portugal 1812 5 reis
This type, a five réis was struck 1812-14 and is scarce in nice condition. These coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. João was in 1812 still Prince Regent for his mother, queen Maria I, not mounting the throne until her death in 1816. In 1812, he was still enjoying the tropical delights of Rio de Janiero and resisting the cortés' demand that he return. The second specimen was lot 1107 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[2] noted, "PORTUGAL: João, 1799-1816, AE 5 reis, 1812, lovely toning, PCGS graded AU55 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection."
