Portugal 1786 6400 reis
This specimen is lot 1371 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PORTUGAL (Münzstätte Lissabon) Maria I. 1786-1799. Peça 1786. Brustbild mit Witwenschleier nach rechts. Rv. Wappen auf gekrönter Wappenkartusche. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich." (Portugal, Lisbon mint, Maria I, 1786-99, gold "joe" of 1786. Obv: veiled bust of queen to right, date below. Rev: Baroque arms. Extremely fine to good extremely fine).
This type was struck 1786-87 only but is seldom seen compared to similar coins that were struck in Brazil. A rare variety exists for 1786 where the right obverse legend reads "PORT ET ALG REGINA" instead of "ET ALG REGINA" shown here.
