Portugal 1787 400 reis
This specimen was lot 72360 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis (Pinto), 1787. Lisbon Mint. Maria I. NGC MS-62. The first date in a brief four-year series, this nearly-choice minor in gold dazzles with tremendous brilliance and a mostly yellow hue throughout." This denomination, called a "cruzado novo," was struck intermittently throughout the eighteenth century. This type is recorded for 1787, 1790, 1795 and 1796 of which the 1790 is the most common. At some point the coin was revalued to 480 réis but continued to be struck bearing "400" on the obverse.
