Portugal (1786-99) 60 reis
The first specimen was part of lot 35231 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), which sold for $382. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 20 & 60 Reis, ND. KM-235 & 284. 2 pieces in lot, both NGC certified. The 20 Reis (1706-77) is AU-58, and the 60 Reis (1786-99) is MS-62." In the old, predecimal system, 20 réis = one vintém, 24 vintéms = one cruzado and 1600 réis = one escudo. Portuguese copper coins of the 1700's turn up occasionally but are generally in poor condition after several centuries of circulation. This silver type, struck in Lisbon without date during the sole reign of Maria I, is scarce in nice condition.
Recorded mintage: 312,897.
Specification: 1.83 g, silver, 18 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 284, Gomes-08.01 (high crown, shown here) or Gomes-09.01 (low crown).
