This specimen was lot 25275 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I & Pedro III gold 4 Escudos (Peca) 1785, AU58 NGC, highly lustrous surfaces with minimal contact marks." This type was struck 1782-85. In 1785 the king died and Maria ruled alone. The subsequent type (KM 290) deleted the king's bust. Varieties exist with and without a dot at the end of the obverse legend.

Recorded mintage: 49,951 (all varieties).

Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW, 32 mm diameter.
