Sincona sale 18, lot 3026

This specimen was lot 3026 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 100 (about US$132 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"400 Reis 1781. Lissabon Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, cruzado of 1781, Lisbon mint, very fine.)"

This denomination, called a "cruzado," was struck intermittently throughout the eighteenth century. This type is recorded for 1778-82. At some point the coin was revalued to 480 réis but continued to be struck bearing "400" on the obverse. This type has a Davenport number but it's really too small to call it a crown.

Recorded mintage: 576,018.

Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter; this specimen 14.47 g.

Catalog reference: KM 273, Dav-1631, Gomes-17.03.
