This type was struck 1707-22, 1733, 1736-41, 1745-47 at Lisbon. With a forty year production run, one would suppose this coin to be common, and it is priced low in the SCWC, but it is in fact seldom seen. There is a very similar issue from Brazil (Bahia and Minas Gerais), equally scarce. This specimen was lot 73043 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1000 Reis, 1717. Lisbon Mint. Joao V. NGC EF-45. A wholesome and fairly SCARCE example with mostly soft yellow color throughout. Some orange toning can be seen in areas."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-98; KM-182.
