Portugal 1716 1000 reis
This type was struck 1707-22, 1733, 1736-41, 1745-47 at Lisbon. With a forty year production run, one would suppose this coin to be common, and it is priced low in the SCWC, but it is in fact seldom seen. There is a very similar issue from Brazil (Bahia and Minas Gerais), equally scarce. The first specimen was lot 147 in Sedwick sale 9 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $460. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lisbon, Portugal, 1000 reis, John V, 1716. Bold XF with old scratch in bottom of shield, curious die-clashing at date." The second specimen was lot 3755 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $230. The catalog description[2] noted, "Portugal. 1000 Reis, 1716. João V, 1706-1750. Arms. Reverse: Cross. About Very Fine."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, .079 troy oz AGW, 18 mm diameter; the first specimen 2.3 grams.
