Brazil 1715-B 1000 reis
This specimen was lot 1116 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted,
"1715 1,000 reis. Bahia mint. VF-30 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold, two reverse rim nicks. Perhaps also from the Newcomer sale of 1935, where lot 71 was called 'Very Good. Rare.' John H. Clapp was a major player at the 1935 Newcomer sale, but apparently used an agent. Many coins from the sale are readily traced to him from plate comparison, but agents were apparently bidding for him in at least some cases, making provenance research on non-plated coins challenging. In some cases, even with no photo, the coin and its description are peculiar enough that ready attribution can be made. In some cases, as here, the connection can be narrowed down to probable. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
This type was struck 1714-26 at the Bahia mint. There is a contemporary issue from the Minas Gerais mint (KM 113, 1724-27) that is much rarer but this type is not common itself. In 1749, the weight of the denomination was lowered to 2.01 g.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.68 g, 0.917 fine gold, .079 oz AGW; this specimen: 2.52 grams, 18.60 mm diameter.
