This specimen was lot 23992 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 1000 Reis 1708-R, clipped planchet. VF Details. Rare date and first piece we have offered. From The RLM Collection, Part I." This type was struck 1708 and 1726 at the Rio mint. Despite the wear and the clipping, this specimen sold for almost five times its catalog value. In 1749, the weight of the denomination was lowered to 2.01 g.
