Sedwick Treasure Auction 38, lot 390
Sedwick 38-0390r.jpg

This specimen was lot 390 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL, Lisbon, gold 1000 reis, João V, 1720, NGC AU details / cleaned. Lustrous and choice, with no damage except for cleaning, rare as from this wreck. With original photo-certificate HOL/TH/69 from the salvors. Recovered from Hollandia, sunk in 1743 off the Isles of Scilly, southwest of England." This type was struck 1707-22, 1733, 1736-41, 1745-47 at Lisbon. With a forty year production run, one would suppose this coin to be common, and it is priced low in the SCWC, but it is in fact seldom seen. There is a very similar issue from Brazil (Bahia and Minas Gerais), equally scarce. It was officially worth 1000 réis but traded for 1200 réis.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Gomes-88.17; KM-182; Fr-98.
