This specimen was lot 236 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lisbon, Portugal, 1000 reis, João V, 1721. VF/XF, popular for jewelry." This type was struck in Lisbon 1707-22, 1733, 1736-41, 1745-47 and is often listed as a quartinho, probably because it was one quarter of a moeda d'ouro (4000 réis). It was officially worth 1000 réis but traded for 1200 réis.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, .079 troy oz AGW, 18 mm diameter; this specimen 2.4 grams.
