Künker sale 293, lot 1115

This specimen was lot 1115 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,504 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POMMERN, POMMERN, HERZOGTUM NACH DER LANDESVEREINIGUNG VON 1625, Bogislaw XIV. (1620-) 1625-1637. Reichstaler 1634, Köslin. Slg. Hahn (Auktion Künker 224) -. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, fast vorzüglich. (Duchy of Pomerania, after the union of 1625, Bogislav XIV, 1625-37, thaler of 1634, Koslin mint. Very rare, very attractive example with beautiful patina, about extremely fine.)"

Another rare issue from this Baltic state. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 28.55 g, silver, this specimen 28.72 g.
