Pomerania-Cammin 1635 thaler Dav-7285
This specimen was lot 31056 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Deeply Toned Gem Taler of Pomerania-Cammin. Bogislaus XIV Taler 1635 MS66 NGC, Stettin mint. A covetable designation for any Taler issue of this vintage and a scarce type encountered only a handful of times at auction in recent memory, certainly none as fine as this awe-inspiring MS66. Decidedly well-struck to a majority of the devices, with only scattered areas of weakness to the legends and the sitter's nose, as is commonly associated with this issue. Despite this, the expansive coin expresses an impressive preservation, with every detail down to the individual whiskers of facial hair painstakingly engraved and fully embossed upon the slate planchet, leaving an impression of quality hard to surpass. Pondlike mirror resplendence fills the fields dressed in a luxurious coating of lavender, cobalt, and peach; a covetable toning palette for any coin, and clearly the result of having been locked away for seemingly centuries in an advanced collector's cabinet. This lot presents a singular opportunity and is expected to garner fervent bidding. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This scarce type was accompanied by KM 87/Dav-7286, KM A88/Dav-7287 and more thalers from Pomerania-Stettin. The bishopric was converted to Lutheranism and the last Catholic bishop died in 1544. The territory was annexed to Brandenburg in 1650.
